The Most Expensive Attorney in the World
Lawyers are one of the most expensive professionals in term of hourly rate. Some of lawyers are charging hundreds of dollars for each hours of their works. The most expensive lawyer in is former U.S. Attorney General Benjamin Civiletti, a partner in the Venable law firm.
Ben is specializing in commercial litigation and internal investigations, and in 2005 became the first U.S. lawyer to charge $1000 an hour. He is also currently one of the three members of the Independent Review board. The IRB is the board that the Teamsters Union must answer to when allegations of corruption and mafia infiltration surface.
Civiletti’s rate doesn’t come close to making him one of the nation’s highest-paid lawyers. Trial attorneys can win multibillion-dollar verdicts and earn fees that break down into more than $1,000 an hour, said Coffee. And a firm working on a merger may charge its client a percentage of a deal instead of billing by the hour. The lawyers who successfully sued tobacco companies in 1998, for example, raked in billions of dollars in fees.
Civiletti was educated at Johns Hopkins University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1957, and at the University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was awarded a Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 1961
