A buffalo here can raise up to USD $22,400. This buffalo is an essential element of the funeral ceremony in the Toraja tradition. The buffalo itself is an endemic species in Toraja area and is quite difficult to breed this animal.

The Tedong Bonga became a prestigious thing for the people of Tana Toraja. Each day the Tedong bonga not only grass-fed, but also bathed, brushed and rubbed with a sort of herb oil for leather and fur so the Tedong bonga will be clean and shine sparklingly and of course will boost the price.
In traditional ceremonies in Toraja, Tedong bonga will be used in the event Ma’pasilaga Tedong (buffalo fight) and Ma’tinggora Tedong (cutting buffalo). The more animals especially Tedong Bonga used in a ceremony it signifies the increasing levels of social intent of the owner as a noble and respected people in the community.
